Sightseeing

Discover fortified churches, monastery caves, Saxon communities, medieval towns, and mountain villages.

Cities such as Rasnov (Rosenau), Brasov (Kronstadt), with deep Saxon roots and magnificent medieval town centers are to be discovered in the surroundings of MATCA. Tranquil mountain villages such as Magura and Pestera of utmost beauty where little has changed over the last century dot the horizon close to the Piatra Craiului Ridge, inviting to soak up the pastoral scenery dotted with haystacks, wooden fences and sheep roaming around.

Villages with fortified churches, some of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO, dating back to between the 13th and 16th century, when Transylvania was part of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire was rising, are another cultural highlight of the area. Viscri, one of these villages which has come to fame thanks to King Charles III acquiring and restoring two Saxon houses, is certainly an outstanding site not to be missed.
